Chronic illness tests you in countless ways. There are fears about the future, feeling dismissed by medical providers, family, and friends, and navigating feelings of despair and hopelessness. Chronic illness can also teach us how to take care of ourselves, reveal strengths we didn't know we possessed, and dispense valuable lessons about compassion, love, and vulnerability. It’s one heck of a roller coaster ride.
When you speak to a professional you are opening yourself up to what you're struggling with. Together, we’ll find solutions to problems and keep you connected to what really matters. You’ll better align with what is meaningful and important about your life. You’ll arrive at your “new normal” with strength, resiliency, and peace and gain confidence to become more active in your health challenge.
Much like other types of illness, substance use is one of the most misunderstood, mistreated and most stigmatized diseases today. Addiction can come in many forms: alcoholism, prescription drug abuse, opiate dependency, and stimulant abuse, to name a few.
Counseling is done best when the client is contemplating change or early in recovery. I will assess whether we are a good fit, or if you would be better served in therapy or a higher level of care. If we are a good fit, we will develop an individualized recovery plan and set short-term and long-term recovery goals to support sustainable success. Together, we will find strategies to deal with your unique barriers, regularly renewing your focus and commitment to who you want to be in your sober life.
Long term substance use can result in physical damage to the body that can lead to chronic disease. Similarly, being diagnosed with a chronic illness, the use of substances to relieve physical pain and emotions can lead to addiction. This is called comorbidity, and if not addressed, can exacerbate symptoms. If you’re feeling like substance use is taking over your life, I can help.
